A Collection of Works by Nicole Shulde
I create mixed media art using historical elements found in antique shops, thrift stores, flea markets, auctions, and family discards. I choose items that I feel have a story worth preserving. These items can be heavy and bulky like old rusty hardware or they can be of the ephemera variety consisting of old documents, stamps, newspapers, advertisements and photographs. I also use acrylic paints, polymer clay tiles and rich texture. My works consist of these vintage elements combined with modern abstract design. When I am painting, pasting, and assembling, I am working intuitively, letting some pieces fall where they will, allowing the lines to appear, texture to arise, lower layers to resurface, delighting me with surprise, while still remaining focused enough to work with intention. In this process I am striving to create evocative works that will both spark imagination with relics from the past and please the eye with contemporary lines, balance, and abstraction. My goal is to create modern compositions that bring forgotten fragments from yesterday into the light. I hope to arouse feelings of resurrection and reverence to the passage of time while still remaining current and relevant to the discerning tastes of today.
